SGMC Health’s Dynamic Duo Turns Nursing Education Into an Escape Room

When Kendra Butenschon, RN, and Amber Chadwick, RN, wanted to help staff sharpen their skills in caring for premature infants, they didn’t reach for a textbook. They built an “escape room” simulation experience.
The Women and Children educators at SGMC Health designed an immersive simulation experience from the ground up, storyline, props, and all, challenging staff to work through the care of a premature infant using critical thinking, collaboration, and real-time decision-making at every stage.
The result earned Butenschon and Chadwick recognition as SGMC Health System Heroes, an honor the health system reserves for employees who best embody its guiding standard: Remarkable People, Extraordinary Care, Human Kindness.
“This experience reflects the very best of our nursing education teams, innovative, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to excellence in patient care,” said Cherise Giddens, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. “Kendra and Amber have created an engaging learning environment that strengthens clinical skills, fosters teamwork, and improves outcomes for our most vulnerable patients.”
Known throughout the Simulation Lab as the dynamic duo of nursing education, Butenschon and Chadwick have built a reputation for finding creative, non-traditional ways to prepare SGMC Health team members to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care.
