South Georgia Spotlight: THOMASVILLE, Georgia

Thomasville has carried the nickname “The Rose City” for well over a century, and it wears it well. Thomas County’s seat sits in the Red Hills of Southwest Georgia, where the landscape shifts and the history runs deep. Victorian-era architecture lines the brick streets downtown, a live oak older than the nation anchors a city corner, and a rose garden with over 1,500 blooms has drawn visitors every spring since 1922.

But Thomasville is more than a pretty postcard.
The downtown district is home to more than 100 locally owned merchants and retailers. Shops like Kevin’s Fine Outdoor Gear & Apparel and Imagination Emporium reflect the range of what you’ll find strolling the bricks, while restaurants like the iconic George & Louie’s, Jonah’s Fish & Grits, and Sweet Grass Dairy & Cheese Shop have built loyal followings well beyond Thomas County. Menus lean into fresh produce, wild game, and quail, all regional specialties rooted in the farmland surrounding the city.

The calendar keeps people coming back year-round. First Friday Sip & Shop runs March through December, the Rose Show & Festival draws crowds every April, and Victorian Christmas transforms downtown each December into something worth the drive from anywhere in South Georgia.

On the economic side, new manufacturing investment is arriving at the Red Hills Business Park, with tens of millions of dollars committed and hundreds of jobs on the way. The Destination Thomasville Tourism Authority has also expanded its reach to cover all of Thomas County, signaling that the city is thinking regionally about its future.
