South Georgia Spotlight: VALDOSTA, Georgia

Valdosta has been Lowndes County’s seat since 1860, when efforts to bring a railroad to the previous county seat fell through, and a new town was established along the tracks. The name honored Governor George Troup, who called his nearby estate “Val d’Aosta” after the Italian Alpine valley, and the city has been growing ever since.

Situated midway between Atlanta and Orlando on I-75, Valdosta is the largest city in South Georgia and one of the region’s most economically diverse communities. Manufacturing, healthcare, education, retail, logistics, and military presence at Moody Air Force Base form a foundation that has helped Lowndes County weather economic cycles for generations.

Valdosta State University, which traces its roots to the South Georgia State Normal College opened in 1906, is the second largest economic driver in the county. Wiregrass Georgia Technical College‘s Valdosta Campus adds another layer to the education pipeline, preparing students for high-demand careers in the trades, healthcare, and technical fields that Lowndes County’s growing industrial base depends on. South Georgia Medical Center anchors a healthcare community that draws patients from across the region and into northern Florida.

The economic momentum is real and recent. New manufacturing investment is arriving in Lowndes County, existing industries are expanding, and the Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority has been intentional about building a pipeline of projects that bring high-paying jobs with strong benefits.

Downtown Valdosta has four National Register Historic Districts — Valdosta Commercial Historic District (Downtown), Fairview, North Patterson Street, and Brookwood North. The 1905 Lowndes County Courthouse anchors a courthouse square surrounded by local restaurants, boutiques, and arts venues. The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts hosts rotating exhibits year-round. Georgia Beer Co., the first craft brewery in South Georgia, draws visitors and locals alike with brews made from regional ingredients including pecans, peaches, blueberries, and honey. South Georgia Pecan Company, in business since 1913, operates four pecan plants within a mile and a half of each other in Valdosta and ships product across the country. Wild Adventures Theme Park brings families from across the region for roller coasters, water attractions, and exotic animals. And so much more!

Valdosta has earned its role as South Georgia’s anchor city, and shows no signs of slowing down.
