A Family Name on the Line: Inside W.G. Hamil’s South Georgia Watermelon Legacy
When summer rolls across South Georgia and roadside stands start stacking up melons, there’s a good chance the ones you’re reaching for carry a name that’s been synonymous with quality for nearly a century. W.G. Hamil, based in Thomasville, Georgia, is one of the region’s most storied agricultural operations, and right now, in the thick of watermelon season, they’re hitting their stride.

A Family Name on the Line
The story doesn’t start with watermelons. It starts with pecans, in 1935, when the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company was established in Troy, Alabama. That founding spirit, built on integrity and a hands-on commitment to the land, carried forward through the decades and eventually put down roots in Thomasville when W.G. Hamil, LLC was established in 2007.
Watermelons became part of the operation in 1980, and the two crops have complemented each other beautifully ever since: pecan season running from early October through February, watermelon season stretching from late April through October. Together, they keep the operation — and the family behind it — busy nearly year-round.
Today, the next generation has stepped in alongside the founders, carrying on a tradition that takes quality personally. Their label says it plainly: “Our Family Name is on the Line.”
Signature Sweet: What Sets These Melons Apart
Not all watermelons are created equal, and W.G. Hamil has built their reputation on knowing the difference. Their brand, W.G. Hamil Signature Sweet, reflects a rigorous process from growing season through final shipment.
The operation uses advanced PAK-TEK technology for grading and sizing, ensuring each melon meets strict standards before it ever leaves the facility. Their facilities are CanadaGAP certified and they maintain a HACCP-certified specialist on staff, the kind of food safety infrastructure you’d expect from an operation that ships watermelons across the entire United States. Every case is labeled with Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) codes and detailed pack and ship dates, so their melons are traceable from farm to table.
But beyond the technology, it’s the hands-on approach throughout the growing season that defines Signature Sweet. W.G. Hamil stays closely involved in the process from the ground up, which is how they’re able to guarantee the consistency — in size, sweetness, and quality — that their wholesale partners and retail customers have come to expect.

Room to Grow
This year, W.G. Hamil arrived at watermelon season with something new: a brand new Florida facility, built with Tyson Steel Buildings and timed perfectly to come online for the 2026 season. The expansion reflects the growth the company has been seeing and their commitment to keeping up with demand without cutting corners on the quality that built their name.
Shipping has officially gotten underway, which means W.G. Hamil Signature Sweets are beginning to make their way to farmers’ markets and grocery stores across the region.
